No. 22 Bears Host Wofford On Saturday

MACON – The 22nd-ranked Mercer football team will open the Southern Conference portion of their regular season schedule on Saturday when the Bears take on league foe Wofford on Hometown Heroes Night in Macon.

Saturday's game will be broadcasted live on ESPN+ with Frank Malloy and Phil Cox handling the duties in the booth. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Five Star Stadium. Rick Cameron and the rest of the Mercer Sports Network will call all of the action as well, and fans can listen to that broadcast on The Creek 100.9 FM, or by visiting Sportsmic. A live statistics link is also being provided by the MU athletics department.

MERCER/WOFFORD SERIES
The Bears are 10-7 all-time in a series with Wofford that dates all the way back to the 1915 season … Mercer will bring a four-game series win streak into Saturday's contest, including a 22-3 win over then-No. 23 Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C., last season … The Bears have captured each of the last two matchups with Wofford at Five Star Stadium, including a 31-17 triumph in the last contest in Macon on Oct. 21, 2023 … Saturday's tilt will mark the second-earliest meeting between the two clubs in series history, falling just four days later than the 2017 matchup that took place on September 9 … Wofford won seven-straight games in the series from 2014-2020, but Mercer snapped that series skid with a 45-14 win on Oct. 23, 2021.

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
Wofford brings back eight starters from last season's 5-7 squad that registered four of its five wins away from Spartanburg, S.C. ... The Terriers return four starters on each side of the ball including a sextet of preseason all-conference picks ... CJ Coombes, one of two returning starting safeties for Wofford, was named to the preseason watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award (FCS Defensive Player of the Year) ... Wide receiver Isaiah Scott headlines the list of returning offensive starters for the Terriers after hauling in 28 catches for 350 yards as a freshman last year ... Wofford dropped a tight 16-15 contest at South Carolina State in Week 1, and fell 14-10 to Richmond in its home opener last week.

BEARS IN SOCON OPENERS
Mercer is 6-6 in conference openers dating back to the 2013 season (modern era of program) and has won five of its last seven Southern Conference lid-lifters ... Saturday's matchup with Wofford will mark the first time that the Bears have opened their conference schedule at home since a 28-27 setback to then-No. 10 Wofford in 2017 ... MU is 0-3 against the Terriers in SoCon openers ... Saturday's game will mark the first time since 2022 that MU has not faced a nationally-ranked opponent in its SoCon opener.

MERCER IN SOCON HOME OPENERS
Mercer has captured five-straight Southern Conference home openers dating back to a 42-28 victory over The Citadel that lifted the lid on the home portion of a CoVID-affected 2020-21 slate … The Bears, who dropped their SoCon home opener for six-straight seasons (2014-19) are now 5-6 all-time in such games and are 6-6 in the modern era of the program (2013-present) in league home lid-lifters … Mercer downed Drake, 31-17, in their Pioneer Football League home opener in 2013 … Saturday's matchup with Wofford will mark the third time in program history that MU has opened its home league schedule against the Terriers, having dropped a 34-33 contest to Wofford in 2015 and a 28-27 nailbiter to the then-10th-ranked Terriers in 2017.
