SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Colby Thomas, an All-Southern Conference selection for the Bears from 2020-22, has been promoted to the Major Leagues by the Athletics, the Major League Baseball club announced on Monday. The Athletics begin a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday in Tampa, Fla., with first pitch scheduled for 7:35 p.m. ET.
Â
With the promotion, Thomas becomes the sixth Mercer Bear to reach the big leagues under head coach Craig Gibson and is the first to debut since Sawyer Gipson-Long on September 10, 2023.Â
Â
A third round pick by the Athletics in 2022, Thomas has emerged as the organization's number two prospect via MLB Pipeline after tearing up the club's minor league system in two-plus seasons of pro ball. After hitting .286 with 18 home runs and 39 doubles across the Low-A and High-A levels in 2023, Thomas cemented himself as one of the organization's brightest young starts in 2024 by being named the A's Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America. Over 132 games in his two minor league stops last season (Double-A and Triple-A), Thomas generated a slash line of .277/.342/.563. His 31 home runs ranked sixth across all of Minor League Baseball, while his 44 doubles put him one shy of the minor league lead. Thomas has continued to tear up Triple-A pitching this season, leading all of Minor League Baseball with 70 RBI while also ranking among minor league leaders in home runs (17), hits (92), and doubles (21). Â
Â
Thomas was standout performer for the Bears from 2020-22, earning All-Southern Conference recognition in 2022 by hitting .325 with 17 homers and 14 doubles. The Valdosta native was a SoCon All-Freshman Team pick in 2021, posting a .247 batting average with 23 extra-base hits. Over his three seasons in Macon, Thomas played in 117 games (115 starts), compiling a career batting average of .291 with 72 extra-base hits, 105 RBI and 113 runs scored
