Mercer Bows Out of SoCon Tournament

Bears fall to UNCG on Saturday afternoon
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mercer's run in the Southern Conference Championship came to an end Saturday evening, as fourth-seeded UNCG defeated the Bears, 16-5, in an elimination game at Fluor Field.

Mercer (40-18) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning following Collin Price's RBI single and David Burke's run-scoring groundout.

However, in the top of the second, the Spartans (31-28) scored six unearned runs to take the lead. After tying the contest at 2-2, Pres Cavenaugh cleared the bases with a grand slam to put UNCG in front for good.

The Spartans tacked on two more runs in the third, three in the fourth, two in the seventh and a pair in the eighth to secure the run-rule victory.

The Bears plated two runs in the third inning, as Treyson Hughes hit an RBI triple and then scored on a wild pitch.

Mercer's final tally came in the eighth on an Antonio Brown RBI double.

UNCG racked up 24 hits in the contest, including seven extra-base knocks.

Meanwhile, Mercer tallied eight hits. Hughes and Jozsef Rohrbacher led the way with two hits apiece.

The Spartans will advance to face third-seeded Samford in another elimination game tonight.
