Harlow fans 10, Mercer collects win over EKU

MACON, Ga. - Josh Harlow struck out 10 and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning as Mercer overpowered Eastern Kentucky, 8-1, in the season opener for both teams at OrthoGeorgia Park Friday evening.

The Bears (1-0) struck out a combined 16 Colonels and added 12 hits on the offensive end to score eight runs in the contest. Following a quick first inning by Harlow, Mercer plated five runs in the second inning and added another two in the third.

Collin Price led the second inning off with a free pass to first while Trevor Austin and David Burke hit back-to-back doubles to bring in Price for the first run of the 2022 season. Later in the inning, Colby Thomas doubled to left field to score Burke and Austin. Jozef Rohrbacher then hit a line drive off the pitcher's leg to advance Thomas to third. Rohrbacher, on first, swiped second base which led Thomas to make it home safely.

The third inning started off with a bang for the home nine as Price and LeBassett would hit back-to-back four-baggers to extend Mercer's lead to 7-0.

Mercer would go onto score another run in the home half of the fifth via a double to left center by William Mapes, scoring Austin.

Harlow (1-0) was credited with the win after striking out 10 over 5.0 innings and only surrendering a pair of hits. Michael Schuler (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in just 1.2 innings of work
