SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Weekly performance awards from the Southern Conference continued to roll in for 22nd-ranked Mercer on Monday afternoon when junior running back CJ Miller was crowned SoCon Offensive Player of the Week, while junior kicker Reice Griffith was named as the league's Special Teams Player of the Week.
Â
The honors were bestowed just less than 48 hours after the Bears scored 14 unanswered points to register a 38-34 comeback win at league rival East Tennessee State on Saturday evening in Johnson City, Tenn. The Bears trailed 34-24 following Hakeem Meggett's 22-yard touchdown reception with 5-1/2 minutes left in the third period.
Â
Miller, a native of Gadsden, Ala., ran for 172 yards and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 5:40 remaining, while also establishing career highs for both receptions (4) and receiving yards (41) in finishing the night with 213 all-purpose yards. The performance showcased the 8th-highest single game rushing yards total in program history, while Miller's 29 rushing attempts ranks third all-time in program annals.
Â
Griffith, who picked up his second league special teams weekly honor for the second-straight week, registered a perfect 6-for-6 tally on kick attempts in Saturday's triumph, including a 49-yard field goal in the first quarter. The Pace, Fla., product also averaged 62.6 yards on seven kickoffs, including four that resulted in touchback and one other whose end result was a fair catch.
The Bears (3-1, 3-0 SoCon) will be back in action again on Saturday when they take on visiting Samford (0-5, 0-3) to highlight Family Weekend on campus. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. and tickets can still be purchased by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.
