Volleyball Knocks Off Hatters, 3-1
MACON, Ga. – Senior Charlotte Harris had a match-high 22 digs to help lead the Mercer volleyball team to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-23) victory over Stetson Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.
Mercer snapped a two-match slide and moved to 11-18 (4-8 A-Sun) while Stetson fell to 9-16 (2-9 A-Sun).
Mercer had four players reach double-figure kill totals for the first time since the team defeated Georgia 3-2 on September 10th of this season. On Saturday, senior Amiee Frutchey led all players with 16 kills while junior Charlayna Braxton had 12 and Anna Coursey and Jennifer Katona booked 10 apiece.
In the first set, the teams exchanged points until the scoreboard reflected a 23-23 tie. The Hatters then used back-to-back kills by Kaley Melville and Kaylee Ream to take the 1-0 advantage. The first set featured 11 tie scores and seven lead changes.
From then on Mercer dominated the match as the final three sets featured only five tie scores and one lead change. Mercer's defense smothered Stetson the final three sets, limiting the hosts to hitting percentages of .036, .081 and .044.
Frutchey's 16-kill performance combined with 16 digs to give the Gresham, Oregon native her second-straight double double.
Braxton's 12 kills came with only one error as she finished with a match-high .423 hitting percentage. Katona's 10 kills came with six block assists and two digs while Coursey collected five block assists of her own.
Junior Monica Sanchez narrowly missed her fourth double-double of the season, combining a match-high 44 assists with nine digs.
Sophomore Emily Rochefort cracked into double-figure digs for the fifth time this season, notching 13 in the win.
Mercer's victory was thorough, as the team finished the match with advantages in hitting percentage (.237-.097), assists (48-41), digs (71-64) and blocks (10-7).
Mercer's next competition is scheduled for November 9, when the team hosts Savannah State. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
