Volleyball Falls at Georgia State, 3-0
ATLANTA, Ga. – Mercer senior middle blocker Libby Hansch knocked down seven kills on 14 swings and added three blocks, but her effort couldn’t stop Georgia State from taking a 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-23) win in Wednesday night’s non-conference volleyball match at the GSU Sports Arena.
Mercer saw its two-match winning streak snapped and fell to 2-7 (0-0 A-Sun) while Georgia State improved to 5-2 (0-0 CAA).
In the first set, Mercer held a 14-13 advantage before Georgia State stormed back with a 9-1 run to take a commanding 22-15 lead. The Panthers went on to capture the first set victory and Mercer was unable to regain a lead until the third set.
In the third set, Mercer raced out to a 4-1 lead before Georgia State scored four consecutive times to tie the frame at five apiece. Later in the set, Mercer took an 18-16 lead on a kill by sophomore Jamie Duffy.
With the third set knotted at 20, the host Panthers scored twice in a row and moments later had secured the win.
All told, the match featured 14 ties and eight lead changes.
Mercer freshman setter Bridget Sheerin dished out 17 assists and added seven digs in the losing effort. Juniors Amiee Frutchey and Charlotte Harris both contributed 13 digs in the loss.
Mercer returns to action at the North Carolina State tournament on Sept. 17-18.
