Volleyball Stumbles at UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Facing the absence of senior leader Krista Hurley, the Mercer volleyball team saw its five-match win streak snapped at the hands of UNC Asheville Tuesday night.  The Bulldogs claimed a 3-0 (25-9, 25-21, 25-13) win at the Justice Center behind a match-high 14 kills by junior Cindi Miller.

Mercer slipped to 11-15 (4-2 A-Sun) on the season while UNC Asheville improved to 13-10 (5-4 Big South).

Despite out-blocking the opponent, Mercer fell for just the third time in October after struggling offensively.  Mercer was limited to a .143 hitting percentage while UNC Asheville’s attackers recorded a .347 hitting percentage.

Junior outside hitter Amiee Frutchey notched nine kills and 13 digs, narrowly missing her eighth double-double effort of the season.  Sophomore Jamie Duffy added nine kills, seven digs and three blocks in the losing effort.

Junior Charlotte Harris tallied a team-high 15 digs while senior Libby Hasnch contributed a team-high four total blocks.

Mercer was unable to gain a lead at any point on Tuesday night.

Mercer returns to action at Campbell on Oct. 30.  Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
