Women's Tennis Ends Season in 5-2 Loss to USC Upstate
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team saw its 2013 season come to a close on Saturday as the Bears were knocked out of postseason contention in a 5-2 loss at home to USC Upstate.
Mercer (5-16, 1-7 A-Sun) plucked a pair of wins off Upstate (13-7, 5-3 A-Sun) as two freshmen ended their first season on a high note. MU's No. 1 Isabel Dennis and No. 3 Roxy Bartz each won their ninth singles match of the season on Saturday as Dennis downed Upstate's No. 1 Constanze Kuerten, 6-4, 6-1 and Bartz knocked off Talia Rojas, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9 in the third set tiebreak.
Mercer was swept in the doubles competition, but Dennis and her teammate junior Lucie Payrat pushed their match to a tiebreaker but eventually fell, 8-7 (7-4).
Payrat is one of two juniors on a team with five freshmen and unfortunately saw her season end in a loss at her No. 2 singles match to Upstate's Isabel von Stryk, 6-2, 6-2. Payrat will lead a team next season that will be much improved after the young freshmen class looks to improve upon a promising first year.
Freshmen Liza Klyachkin and Natalie Franklin also lost their final match of the season falling, 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1 respectively. The Bears other upperclassman Amanda Bertani dropped her match at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0 to Upstate's Julie Bell to round out the scoring on the day.
