Women's Tennis Closes Season With Tough Loss
MACON, Ga. – Mercer's women's tennis team closed the books on 2011 by dropping a narrow decision to Kennesaw State University, 4-3. The loss left the Bears with a 5-14 record overall and 1-9 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, while the Owls improved to 18-5 and 7-3 in the A-Sun.
KSU won the team point in doubles by taking two of the three matches. MU's lone win in dual play came at the No. 3 position, where freshman Amanda Bertani and junior Sarah Hanna defeated the Owls' Therese Lagerkvist and Mackenzie Swindall, 8-6.
The Bears' freshman French players – Lucie Payrat and Aurelie de Montjou – both won at the Nos. 3 and 4 slots, respectively. Payrat topped KSU's Swindall, 6-1, 6-2, to extend her current win streak to 10 matches.
De Montjou defeated the Owls' Lagerkvist in straight sets, as well, 6-3, 6-3.
Mercer's other point came from the team's lone senior, Amalia Bugge. Bugge, playing her final match in the Orange & Black, appropriately was the last match off the court in a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alexandra Apostu.
