Women's Tennis Tripped Up in Spring Opener
MACON, Ga. – Mercer University’s women’s tennis squad took the wraps off its spring season at home on Thursday, falling to Georgia State University, 6-1, in a non-conference match.
GSU started the day by sweeping all three doubles matches to earn its first team point. The Panthers then won five-of-six singles matches to secure the victory in what was the spring season opener for both teams.
The Bears’ lone win came at the No. 3 singles slot where freshman Lucie Payrat earned a grueling three set win. Payrat dropped the first set by a 6-3 score and worked hard to win the second, 7-5. In the third-set tiebreaker, Payrat out-scored GSU’s Martina Ondrackova, 11-9, for the victory.
Senior Amalia Bugge, playing No. 2 singles, also went three sets (2-6, 6-1, 6-0) before losing to the Panthers’ Katerina Gresova.
