Bloggin' With Sara

September 7, 2010 -

On Monday, we enjoyed our day off from soccer and went out for Mexican food to celebrate Natalie Clarke's birthday! Tuesday, we were back in action, hitting the weights during the day and practicing in the evening.  Practice began with the traditional "butt's up" on the birthday girl! We also held a M.U.S.C.L.E (Mercer University Soccer Clinic and Learning Experience) clinic Wednesday after practice. The clinic was an hour long training session finishing with a small sided game.  Thursday, the Hudson's had delicious food delivered to the locker room after practice, so we could eat and enjoy everyone's favorite Thursday night television program as a team.

Our big weekend of games was finally here! We played UGA in a thrilling double overtime game.  At half time we were winning 2-0 in front of a record crowd of almost 700 people.  We couldn't hold the shutout and ended up falling to the 25th ranked team 3-2 in double overtime. The Barrett's hosted a meal after the game on soccer highway.

Sunday was another big game day for us. We enjoyed some breakfast as a team before we headed to the locker room.  We took on FSU and went down 1-0 early due to a penalty kick. We came out fighting again in the second half but couldn't manage to put one in the back of the net. After the game, we signed autographs and then enjoyed burgers from our new grill on soccer highway and desserts from Emily Milone’s family.

Another much needed day off was finally here.  We were free from soccer and class and spent Labor Day recovering from the two tough games and the stomach pains from over indulging in sweets. We are now preparing for our weekend in North Carolina!

This past week was the first week of classes and the start of the regular season.  We hosted Georgia Southern last Sunday with a solid 4-0 victory.  Later that evening, President Underwood hosted the annual President's dinner to welcome back the Athletic Department.

We began class Tuesday with both some nerves and excitement.  Excited that two-a-days were over, those taking 18 hours weren't thrilled to begin their hectic schedules.  Practice continued to go well as we prepared to travel to Samford and Georgia State, and Coach showed his age by referring to his laptop as a "Macintosh."

Thursday afternoon we loaded the bus to head to Birmingham. Jason rode comfortably snuggled up with his quilt, while Peter was forced to share his seat with the cooler.  The 4 hour ride was finally over, and we headed out to have a short training session.  We enjoyed dinner in the hotel lobby, and then hit the hay to prepare for our Friday night game against Samford.

Friday was spent relaxing in the hotel studying, eating, and sleeping.  Our game against Samford started rough, but after a motivating half speech, we managed to score two goals in the second half to take the game into overtime.  After two overtime periods that game ended in a tie.  We were back on the bus to head home to Macon.  We arrived back to the University Center at 4:30 AM anxious to get to our own beds. Coach showed his sensitive side as made the executive decision to move our Saturday practice allowing us to sleep in.

We headed to the field Saturday evening for a light practice only to met down there by a thunderstorm.  After attempts at playing in the monsoon, coach decided it would be more effective to head inside rather than having Nadja continue to be blinded by the rain drops. Finishing up the training session, we ended with some yoga lead by our own Natalie Clarke.

Sunday morning we were back on a bus to travel to Atlanta.  Greeted by the Georgia State security guard with a cheery "Hey ladies! Welcome to the ATL," we hit the field ready to take on our in-state rival.  This game also went into double overtime, but Georgia State ended up scoring leaving us with our first loss of the season.

Now recovering from our two 110 minute games from this past weekend, we sit 1-1-1 as we prepare to take on two top 25 schools this weekend on Bear Field, UGA on Friday night and FSU on Sunday afternoon.
