Women's Golf to Say "Aloha" to Defending National Champs in November
MACON, Ga. – Mercer University women’s golf head coach Gary Guyer will go to great lengths to make sure that his team gets to face the best competition. On November 1-2, 2011, he will prove it as the Bears travel to Honolulu, Hi., to participate in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
The event will be the last tournament of the fall season for MU and the team will be pitted against some of the nation’s best. Among the participating teams will be the defending NCAA Division I women’s golf championship team, UCLA.
That’s a fact which drew Guyer to enter his team in the event (which will be the furthest an MU women’s golf team has ever travelled for a tournament).
“We want to face the best competition possible,” Guyer said. “Obviously, this is a great trip to make for our program, but more important is the fact that it will be a big test for our team to face some of the nation’s best women’s golfers.
“As a coach, it’s a time when I can see how individuals will respond to pressure, as well. We will have to be able to focus and tune-out any distractions to be at the top of our game.”
The Rainbow Wahine Invitational is held at the Kapolei Golf Course in Honolulu, HI. It will be a 54-hole tournament, with 36 holes played the first day and the final round will be 18 holes.
