Fears Garners A-Sun Player of the Week

MACON, Ga. – Mercer sophomore Lacey Fears was named the Atlantic Sun Women’s Golfer of the Week for the first time in her career Wednesday.  The Warner Robins, Ga. native earned the distinction after collecting individual medalist honors at the JU Classic on Tuesday.

Fears capped an exceptional three-day performance at the JU Classic with a 76 in Tuesday’s final round.  Her three-round total of 220 helped her outpace 32 other competitors at the event and marked her third collegiate career title.

Fears’ collegiate resume now includes the JU Classic title and a pair of Eat a Peach championships.  Fears earned her first Eat a Peach championship in her freshman year with the Bears and defended that title this past fall.

For the second time this year, Fears has captured individual medalist honors in a tournament that Mercer has captured the team title.  Mercer finished the atop the team leaderboard in both the 2011 Eat a Peach and the 2012 JU Classic.

Fears’ honor marks the first time a Mercer women’s golfer has earned a conference Player of the Week honor.  The last Mercer player to earn a mid-season conference award was Alex Quagliata, who was named A-Sun Golfer of the Month on December 19, 2006.

After conclusion of the 2009-10 academic year, the A-Sun conference switched from a Player of the Month to a Player of the Week format for men’s and women’s golf.

Mercer returns competitive play on February 26th at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic.  That event will be contested over three days at the Cougar Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.
