Women’s Golf Ready for Coastal Georgia Invitational
Sea Island, GA - The Mercer women's golf team has completed preparation for its second tournament of the spring in this week’s Coastal Georgia Invitational in Sea Island, Ga. The competition will be played on the par-72, 6,000-yard Retreat Golf Course.
The 18-hole Retreat at Sea Island Golf Club is a resort/semi-private golf course that opened in 1974. The venue was designed by Joe Lee and later Davis Love III redesigned the course to make it the masterpiece it is today.
The Bears are coming off a 5th place finish at the Jacksonville University Classic. In that event, Mercer got off to a good start on day one, but was not able to keep the momentum going on the second day. Head coach Gary Guy identifies goal this week as continuing to get better each round.
"We played okay last week, but it was not up to our standards," Guyer said. "But the lesson we learned is that the way we putt, is the way we score. I think our team always has to keep in mind that our short game is the most important thing."
Mercer’s lineup will consist of sophomore Aurelie Wiriath, freshman Lacey Fears, juniors Alicia Poole and Keri Lynn Carson and sophomore Kaitlin Marrin.
"We were a little concerned about our preparation for the first tournament since it was hard to get outside because of the weather," Guyer said. "This week we have been able to practice more and work on our touch shots and putting. We should do much better this week."
Following the Sea Island tournament, the Bears’ next event is scheduled for March 6-7 at the Barefoot at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, SC.
