Fears Leads at the Chris Bannister Classic; Mercer Tied for Third
GLENCOE, Ala. – Mercer freshman Lacey Fears fired an even-par 72 and leads all players at day one of the Chris Bannister Golf Classic at Silver Lakes Golf Course. As a team, Mercer is tied with Samford for third at the event.
“It was fun to watch Lacey play today,” head coach Gary Guyer said. “She played well, and we’re pretty excited about that.
Jacksonville State leads the event after recording a cumulative score of 300 on Sunday. Lamar (309) is second followed by Mercer and Samford (315). Florida Gulf Coast (316), Evansville (319) and Butler (327) rounded out the seven-team field.
“As a team we have something to prove when we go out there tomorrow because we are much better than we played today,” Guyer said.
Freshman Mary Alice Murphy and sophomores Kaitlin Marrin and Kimmy Graff all carded 81’s on Sunday. Sophomore Aurelie Wiriath posted an 83 and its tied with four other golfers for 29th place invidually.
Fears posted three birdies and three bogeys en route to her tournament leading opening round. Fears will look to keep her lead on the field of 41 other competitors in Monday’s second round.
