Mercer Women’s Golfers Continue Stellar Summer

Georgia Women’s Open

NEWNAN, Ga.- Rising sophomore Lacey Fears followed her first round 68 with a 3-over par 75 to place fourth in the 2011 Georgia Women’s Open. A tournament total of one-under par 143 gave Fears the Low Amateur finish, outpacing 24 other amateurs in the field.

“I played solid golf today and am proud of how I handled myself,” Fears said. “This was a great field and it was fun playing against tour players. One bad swing led to a tough hole and that was the difference. I learned a lot.”

LPGA tour rookie, Dori Carter of Valdosta, won her first Georgia Women’s Open, conducted for the fifth time in the event’s history at Canongate at Summer Grove Golf Club in Newnan.  LPGA Futures Tour professional Lacey Agnew of Jonesboro finished second.

Mercer rising junior Kimmy Graff fired a final round 75 after carding 77 in the opening round en route to a First Flight victory.

With the win, Carter won the coveted W.A. (Bill) Roquemore trophy and a check for $1,500.  The trophy is named for Bill Roquemore, founder of the Canongate family of golf courses and a long time supporter of women’s golf in Georgia.

Ontario Women’s Match Play

 

ORILLIA, Ontario. (GOLF ASSOCIATION OF ONTARIO) – Mercer rising junior Kaitlin Marrin captured Medalist honors at the Ontario Women’s Match Play Championship. Kaitlin opened with a 73 to lead all 65 players in the field.

“Today was an awesome day,” Marrin said. “I went to see [my instructor) after my round yesterday and we got a lot of stuff sorted out. It was a good call. I had a chip in for eagle and three birdies today.”

Marrin won her first two matches 4&3 and 5&3 before losing 1-down in the semi finals.

The Ontario Women’s Match Play Championship is contested annually and 2011 marks the 30th anniversary of the event. Past champions include World Golf Hall of Fame member Marlene Stewart Streit and Canadian and Ontario Golf Hall of Fame member Mary Ann Hayward, who has earned the title six times.
