Women’s Golf Adds Sarah “Louie” Brown
MACON, GA – Mercer head women’s golf coach, Gary Guyer, is proud to announce the signing of Sarah “Louie” Brown of Severna Park, Md., to a National Letter of Intent. Brown currently attends and competes for Severn School and will join the team as a freshman in the fall of 2011.
Brown’s golf career started later than most. From the time she was three all she had in her hands were lacrosse and field hockey sticks. Due to the popularity of lacrosse in Maryland, the region is an unlikely source for girl golfers.
At the age of twelve, Brown noticed her father swinging a golf club in the driveway and asked if she could try. Her father, John, handed her the golf club and told her to try it out. He noticed how natural it seemed for her to swing a club. Thus, started Louie’s dream of becoming a top professional golfer (she even decided to use her nickname, Louie, in the golf world because there are already two other Sarah Browns on the Futures Tour).
After hours at the course and competing in local tournaments, Brown wanted more, better competition and harder, longer courses. She spent numerous weekends competing year-round in AJGA, IJGT, Optimist International, and WWGA events.
“Louie is an amazing girl and an accomplished junior golfer. When you recruit a player for so long you really get to know them and her family. Louie is someone I look forward to competing with over the next four years,” commented Coach Gary Guyer. “Our team’s passion is to compete at the highest national level. We are getting there and Louie is going to help us get there quicker.”
Brown found success on the course after only three years of playing golf, by winning the MAPGA Poolesville Golf Club Classic in 2008 and shooting her low score at the time, 74. Her success continued on the AJGA by posting two top-10 finishes and on the IJGT with four top-10 finishes. One of her favorite golf experiences was competing in the WWGA 84th National Junior Championship shooting 81-73 and finished 9th out of a field of 96. She qualified for the championship flight and went on to win two matches in the championship match play event.
Brown considered several schools in the Carolinas and Florida, but after visiting Mercer and meeting Coach Guyer and the team she knew Mercer was right for her. Brown is looking forward to helping the team get to post season play.
Sarah “Louie” Brown is the only daughter of John Brown and Janet Nebel. She was born on January 26, 1993 in Annapolis, Maryland and plans to major in sports management at Mercer.
