The Mercer Women's golf team recently completed another year of volunteering their time and efforts to help spread the game of golf to the youth in the Macon community. Just Us Girls, a program which targets girls from six to twelve years of age, brings Mercer’s women’s golfers together with children in the city of Macon.

"This is my fourth year of being involved with this outreach and it is just a way for us to give back to the community," said Coach Gary Guyer. "Golf is a mainstream sport, but there is still a lack of young girls getting involved in the game. Most experts will agree that it takes about 10 years to become highly-skilled at a craft so we are trying to get them involved at an early age."

Just Us Girls is an educational and social program created by Neal Johnson of The Idle Hour Club and implemented by the Mercer women's golf team. The program coincides with the student-athlete school year from September through April. Sessions are an hour long and begin at 4 p.m. every Wednesday afternoon.

A typical afternoon has each junior golfer paired with a Mercer team member. Putting contests are always fun as the Mercer team members outline holes on the putting green with orange ribbon. The contest is intense and entertaining. Of course, the junior golfer paired with the Mercer women's golf coach usually wins.

There are short game lessons and drills as well as full-swing instruction. The year always ends on the Par 3 golf course with the winning team getting to receive the first piece of homemade cake. The end of the year party is something you do not want to miss.
