Women’s Golf in Final Week of Qualifying

MACON, Ga. – Since returning from winter break on January 10, the Mercer women’s golf team has been working hard in anticipation of the spring season opener at the Jacksonville Classic. Four round of qualifying have been completed and two remain to determine which players travel to the tournament at the Hidden Hills Golf Club on February 5-7.

“We have a lot of great players on this team and I expect them to come into the season in top form, both physically and mentally,” Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. “It is easy to see who wants to compete at the highest level and who did not put forth the effort to be prepared for the start of the season. I want to reward those that put forth the effort.”

The Jacksonville Classic is hosted by Jacksonville University and is a three-day, 54-hole event.  Saturday features a practice round followed by 18 holes of competition on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

After participation in the JU Classic, the team travels to the Kiawah Island Classic, known as the “Largest Women’s Collegiate Tournament”.  Annually the event hosts over 40 teams and this year Mercer will make its fourth-straight appearance in the event. The dates are February 25-28.

Mercer is set to make its first ever appearance at the Spider Spring Break Invitational on March 9-11. This tournament is hosted by the University of Richmond and will be played in Southport, NC.

The final regular season tournament is hosted by the University of Cincinnati. Mercer is set to make its second-straight appearance in the prestigious event held at the Plantation Inn Resort in Crystal River, Fla. That contest will be competed from March 22-25.

The A-Sun Conference Championship is April 8-11. The championship will be held at Victoria Hills Golf Club in Daytona Beach, Fla.

“Going into my fifth season, this is the best team we have had from top to bottom,” Guyer said.  “Each incoming class is bringing better talent onto our team. The upperclassmen continue to work hard and improve so we finally have a dynamic that makes the entire team better.”

“We have a challenging schedule this spring,” Guyer said. “I believe we have a chance to win a couple of tournaments along the way and finishing with an A-Sun Championship. Even though we were picked third, this team has the talent to win it all and advance to the NCAA’s.”
