A-Sun Play Continues for Women’s Basketball at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Mercer women's basketball team is set to hit the road for the first time in over two weeks, traveling north to meet East Tennessee State in Atlantic Sun play on Saturday.  Tip-off between the Lady Buccaneers and Bears is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

 

LAST TIME OUT

 

MACON, Ga. – Briana Williams and Ry'van Buchanan combined for 46 points as the Mercer women's basketball team fell to Stetson, 89-84 on Wednesday at the University Center.

 

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

 

ETSU enters Saturday's matchup with Mercer at 2-11 (1-2 A-Sun) after most recently defeating USC Upstate 67-64 on Wednesday night.  The Lady Bucs are winners in two of their last three contests after starting the season with 10-straight losses.

 

ETSU was picked to finish third among A-Sun competition in a preseason poll of the league's coaches.  Sophomore guard/forward Destiny Mitchell picked up Preseason All-Conference honors in the same poll.

 

Mitchell paces the ETSU in both scoring (10.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg).  The Bluffton, Ga. native is currently riding a streak of five-straight games with 10 or more points.

 

As a team, the Lady Bucs average 63.5 points per game, good enough for third-best among A-Sun teams.  The team is also one of the top rebounding squads in the league, ranking second in rebounding margin (+1.1).

 

GAME NOTES

 

Mercer scored 84 points against Stetson on Wednesday, marking the first time the team has topped the 80-point barrier in a reluation game since December 5, 2009.  On that date, Mercer downed Belmont 98-69 at the University Center.

 

Briana Williams and Ry'van Buchanan have topped the 20-point barrier in the same game twice this season.  The last team to have two players score 20 or more in the same game on multiple occasions was the 2009-10 Bears.  Two players scored 20 or more in the same game twice that season.
