MU Women's Basketball Head Coach Steps Down
MACON, Ga. - Mercer University Athletics has announced that women’s basketball head coach Janell Jones has resigned her position to assume the head coach position at Cal State Los Angeles. She will leave her duties at Mercer on June 30.
“Janell has done a great job for us,” said MU director of athletics Bobby Pope. “We certainly appreciate all she did for the Bears’ program and wish her well on her future endeavors.”
In her three seasons at Mercer, Jones was a composite 35-56 after inheriting a team which went 4-26 her first season in 2007-08. The very next year, her team enjoyed the biggest RPI turnaround in the nation – a swing of 153 points – as her club finished 17-14. In 2009-10, the Bears were 14-16, but were the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament, making an A-Sun post-season appearance for a second-straight season.
By assuming the reins at CSLA, Jones is making a return to California. Prior to joining Mercer’s staff, Jones was the head coach at the University of California-San Diego.
