Women's Basketball to Wrap Up A-Sun Play in Nashville
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With just two games remaining in the
regular season, the Mercer women's basketball team has posted
a 13-14 (10-8 A-Sun) record and is in the driver's seat to
capture the second seed at the upcoming Atlantic Sun
tournament.
If Mercer can top both Belmont and Lipscomb this weekend, the Bears
enter next week's league tournament as the No. 2 team. The
Bears tip off the crucial weekend at the Curb Event Center against
Belmont, Thursday night at 6 p.m. ET.
Belmont welcomes Mercer after dropping a 67-46 decision to FGCU in
Fort Myers, Fla. last weekend. The Bruins look to improve their
13-13 (8-10 A-Sun) record and move up from their current position
as the fourth-seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
Belmont was picked to finish third among A-Sun competition in a
pair of preseason polls conducted by the league's coaches and
the media.
The Bruins have shown the ability to knock off a powerful opponent
in the Curb Event Center. On Nov. 21, the Bruins notched a
signature win over Alabama, 69-67 at home.
The Bruins return four starters and seven letterwinners from last
year's squad that finished 18-13 (12-8 A-Sun). Belmont is led
by preseason all-conference selection Amber Rockwell and teammate
Haley Nelson. Nelson, the Bruin's top scorer, ranks sixth in
the conference in scoring (13.3 ppg) while Rockwell is second on
the squad with 13 points a game and is one of the league's
best three-point shooters.
Belmont is 6-5 at home while Mercer is 6-9 on the road this
season.
