Bears Cancel Opening Day Due to Storm in Southeast

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team will have to wait until this weekend to open their 2011 campaign as the recent storm in southeast forced the cancellation of today's game against Alcorn St. The Bears were scheduled to play a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.

Due to the severe winter weather in eastern Mississippi, Alcorn St. was unable to leave for the Peach State yesterday. The Lady Braves play in a tournament this weekend in Atlanta, and are unable to make it to Macon for today's doubleheader.

The Bears now open the 2011 season on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Spring Hill Suites Eagle Classic hosted by Georgia Southern. Mercer plays four games over the weekend starting first with Radford at 11 a.m. and then a 1:30 first pitch against Georgia Southern on Saturday.

The Bears home opener is now delayed until a Feb. 21 doubleheader against Oakland beginning at 4 p.m.

Head Coach Mike Raynor said that the team will try to make up the games later this season.
