Doubles Play Highlights Mercer Men's Tennis at Southern Intercollegiate Championships
ATHENS, Ga. – Mercer University’s men’s tennis team continued play at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday, with doubles competition beginning and singles continuing. The 43rd annual SIC – the nation’s oldest fall collegiate tournament – is being hosted by the University of Georgia.
The Bears tandem of senior Evandro Rosindo and sophomore Peter Tauchner had a big day in doubles for head coach Warren Woolfolk’s squad. The duo received a first round bye and faced Georgia State’s tandem of Trento Spikes and Gabe Townes. The Bears’ pair took an 8-3 win and advanced to the third round.
Rosindo and Tauchner where then pitted against LSU’s Jordan Gridley and David Roberts. Mercer’s pair earned a hard-fought, 8-6, win and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division II doubles bracket.
In singles action, Rosindo and Tauchner both fell in the third round of the championship bracket in Division II. Rosindo lost to Alabama’s Rickey Doverspike (6-3, 6-2) and Tauchner was defeated by Vanderbilt’s Charlie Jones (6-2, 6-0).
In the third round of the Division III bracket, junior Mark Worsham lost to Liberty University’s Giancarlo Lemmi, 7-5, 6-0.
In the Division II singles consolation bracket, junior transfer Pierre Tafelski bounced back from a first-round loss yesterday and topped South Carolina’s Harry Menzies, 6-2, 6-0.
In other Division II doubles play, Tafelski and Dave Barton fell to Vanderbilt’s tandem of Jones and Alex DiValerio, 8-6. Freshman John Bauerle and Worsham lost by an 8-2 score to Joe Solisbury and David O’Hairie from Memphis.
Action in the SIC tournament continues Sunday and Monday.
