Men's Tennis Drops Spring Opener at Georgia State
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Mercer men’s tennis team got its spring season underway on Wednesday falling to Georgia State, 5-2, at Piedmont Park.
The Bears (0-1) dropped two of three doubles matches to give the Panthers the doubles point. MU’s only win came at the No. 2 slot where seniors Fernando Armendaris and Evandro Rosindo took a hard-fought 8-5 win over GSU’s Vincent Verpeaux and Thomas Cook.
The Panthers clinched the match with four successive wins in singles, taking the sixth, fifth, fourth and third competitions in that order of finish. The Bears’ lone wins came at at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions.
At first singles, junior Pierre Tefelski earned a three-set win over GSU’s Valente. Tefelski dropped the opening set, 6-2, before bouncing back to win the next two sets, 6-3 and 6-4.
In second singles play, sophomore Peter Tauchner topped the
Panther’s Breon Badger, also in three sets. Tauchner won the
opening set by a 6-3 score, only to drop the second set by a 6-4
count. In the deciding set, Tacuhner endured to gain a 7-5
decision.
