Betts Earns Capital One Academic All-District Honors
MACON, Ga. – Mercer men's soccer junior midfielder Will Betts was named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV first team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Saturday morning.
To be eligible for the Academic All-District teams, student-athletes must be starters or important reserves with at least 3.30 cumulative grade point averages. Candidates also must complete at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and be at least sophomores athletically.
With his first team selection, Betts is now eligible for Academic All-America honors, where first, second and third team honorees will be selected later this month.
Betts, a finance major, has had a breakout junior season for the Bears, setting a career-high in points and goals thus far in 2011. The Brenham, Texas native currently leads Mercer and ranks tied for 10th in the A-Sun with 12 points, on the strength of five goals and two assists. Betts also paces the Bears with three game-winning goals this season which puts him in a three-way tie for third-most in the conference.
A team captian this season, Betts was one of just four Academic All-District selections among Atlantic Sun Conference institutions.
Betts and the rest of the Bears return to the field on Wednesday evening when it takes on Lipscomb in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Championship. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Summers-Taylor Stadium on the campus of East Tennessee State University.
