Shutter Named to College Soccer News National Team of the Week
MACON, Ga. – Mercer men's soccer sophomore Josh Shutter was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the week of Sept. 13-19 as announced by the publication on Monday morning.
Shutter was one of just three defensive players in the entire country selected to the team. The national award is the first for any Mercer player this season and only the second given to any player in the Atlantic Sun Conference, FGCU forward Deion Jones earned a spot on the team for the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5.
The Sinking Spring, Pa. native played a huge role in the Bears 2-1 win over previously unbeaten in-state rival Georgia State on Sept. 19. Shutter scored both goals in the contest, including the game-winner in the 85th minute of play. The goals were Shutter's first as a Bear after transferring to Mercer from Clemson University.
The win over GSU improves Mercer's overall record to 3-1-1 and moves its unbeaten streak up to an A-Sun leading four games. The Bears 3-1-1 mark is their best standing after the first five games of a season since they went 4-1 to start the 2007 campaign.
Mercer gets back on the road to start play next weekend, when it travels up to Virginia to take on Virginia Military Institute on Friday, Sept. 24. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Patchin Field.
