Intersquad Helps Lacrosse Team Grow

MACON, Ga. – After its Saturday afternoon (Sept. 24) intersquad game was complete, Mercer University lacrosse head coach Jason Childs can see his young squad is headed in the right direction. The Bears’ roster stands at 43 member - largely freshmen and sophomores - after the inaugural season in 2010-11.
“We learned a lot about ourselves,” said Childs of his team, only in its second year of existence. “I saw a lot of things we need to work on, but I also saw many really good things we can build upon.
“It was good to see the freshmen step up and it was good to see the upper classmen lead. We are off to a good start and have a solid foundation to build on going forward as we prepare for the season. We have some great momentum to grow as a team heading into this Saturday’s scrimmage versus Birmingham Southern.
“Having the intersquad and practices are one thing,” reminded Childs. “But, it will be good now for us to face an actual opponent and to have our team all together on the same sideline, and not competing against each other. That’s an important part of our maturation as a team, as well”
One of the aspects of Saturday’s intersquad which drew praise from Childs was the continued strong fan support the team as received on campus. “The crowd was awesome, said Childs. “To have upwards of 400 people for an intersquad game is phenomenal. Between the youth lacrosse games which took place on the fields earlier in the day, and our own crowd, it was a great day for lacrosse in middle Georgia.”
The Bears and Birmingham Southern square off on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. on the athletics practice field located on the south side of the MU campus.
