Bears Topped by Sacred Heart on the Road
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Mercer's Cole Branch scored three goals, but it was not enough as his team fell at Sacred Heart University, 17-7. The Bears fell to 0-8 in their inaugural season on the turf.
Mercer trailed 6-0 with 4:39 left in the second quarter, before mounting a comeback bid with three-consecutive goals. Harry Baker and John Avent scored late in the second stanza – making the score 6-2 at halftime – along with Eoin Collins' tally at the 11:48 mark of the third quarter, drawing the Bears to within 6-3.
Unfortunately for Mercer, SHU reeled of five unanswered goals to forge ahead 11-3.
Scott Carter scored MU's other goal of the game. Collins added two assists to his totals, while Avent, Baker and Brett Eisenmann had one assist each.
Justin Bateman started in goal, play the first 53:47 minutes and allowing 15 of the goals and making 17 saves. Dillon Volk was in net the final 6:13 and permitted two goals.
Sacred Heart out-shot the Bears by a 53-28 margin. SHU also won 22 of 28 faceoffs.
