Bears 10th After Day 1 of Brickyard

MACON, Ga. – After Day No. 1 of its own prestigious Brickyard Collegiate men’s golf tournament, Mercer University’s team is in 10th place in the 15-team field which features several of the nation’s top NCAA Division I programs. The Bears team had a composite of 299, 11-over-par for the day.

Georgia Tech leads the tourney at eight-under as a team. The Yellowjackets are one of just three teams in red numbers. Florida State (-6) and North Florida (-4) are also under par as a team.

Mercer is ahead of five teams currently. Among those looking at the Bears’ backs after the first day are Gonzaga, Colorado State, Oklahoma, Charleston and Air Force.

Two of the Mercer’s contingent – Hans Reimers and Josh Cone – find themselves in the top 25 of the 84-player field. Both Bears’ team members carded one-over-par 73’s on the 7,175 yard  Brickyard at Riverside course.

Reimers might have joined the list of individuals in red numbers were it not for a double-bogey six on No. 8. Reimers had five birdies and eight pars on the day.

Cone had a solid round, as well. The junior had three birdies and 11 pars on his card.

Alex Street is tied for 47th after a 76 for his opening round. Teammate James Beale was one behind tied for 58th after his round of 77.  Thomas Holmes rounded out the Bears’ scoring with an 83.

The Brickyard Collegiate continues Saturday and Sunday. Admission for all fans is free of charge each day.
