PONTE VERDA BEACH, Fla. – After over a three-month hiatus, the Mercer men’s golf team returns to competitive play this week, teeing it up at the Jacksonville Invitational at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course in Ponte Verda Beach, Fla.
Freshman Mookie DeMoss will represent Mercer’s No. 1 golfer, joined by John Gregory Joseph, Hans Reimers, Josh Cone and Stefan Labuschagne. Mercer’s lineup for the event was dictated by a recent qualifying competition among the team’s players.
"We had a great qualifier but it's time to focus on preparing a strategy for TPC and becoming the hunter this week,” head coach Andrew Tredway said.
Monday’s round one marks Reimers’ debut in Orange and Black after transferring from Portland after the fall semester.
"We are very excited to get started on Monday at TPC Sawgrass,” Tredway said. “It's one of the most famous courses in the world and it's a great opportunity to compete against some of the best players in the country."
The Jacksonville Invitational features a bevy of the nation’s top teams, including No. 3 Florida, No. 23 Wake Forest, No. 39 East Carolina, No. 41 Liberty, No. 45 Clemson, and No. 47 North Florida. Also competing at the event are Charleston Southern, Jacksonville, ETSU, FGCU, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, James Madison and Old Dominion.
"The key for our players and coaches is that we do everything this spring with a sense of urgency, starting with Monday,” Tredway said. “We can't wait for the conference championship or an NCAA regional to play that way. It has to start Monday because these guys are fantastic when they go out with that attitude."
