MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – Mercer sophomore Matt Kocolowski carded a two-under, 70 in the final round of the VCU Shootout to help the Bears tie James Madison for 11th place at the Hermitage Country Club.

As a team, Mercer recorded a 291 on Tuesday, equaling host Virginia Commonwealth and Charlotte for the fourth-best team score of the day.  On Tuesday, the Bears outshot North Carolina Wilmington, East Carolina, Richmond, Virginia Tech, James Madison, Wichita State and Old Dominion.

“We hung in there at the end and made a bunch of birdies which helped us move up a few places,” Mercer head coach Andrew Tredway said.  “We just got off to an awful start Monday an struggled to recover.”

Mercer’s 291 came in conjunction with a first and second round 307 and 295.  Mercer (893) bested Wichita State (900) and Old Dominion (904) in the final results.

North Carolina Wilmington (862) captured the top spot in the final standings, followed by Wake Forest (863), East Carolina (868), Richmond (870) and UNC Greensboro (871).

After shooting 79 in the first round, Kocolowski buckled down and recorded an even par 72 in the second round of play before posting Mercer’s only sub-par round of the event on Tuesday.  Kocolowski birdied four holes in the third round and tied for 31st place individually.

Mercer returns to action hosting the Brickyard Collegiate on Oct. 8-10 at the Brickyard at Riverside.
