Tribby Ties for Third at Irish Creek Collegiate
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Mercer senior Matt Tribby carded a one-over, 72 on the final day of the Irish Creek Collegiate to finish the event tied for third place individually. As a team, the Bears finished fourth among the 13-team field.
Tribby equaled Kennesaw State's J.P. Putnam's two-day total of 209 to place third among the 75 golfers at the event. Charlotte's Corey Nagy outpaced Putnam and Tribby by two shots to claim the tournament title.
The 49ers also won the team competition, shooting an impressive 842 (-10) on its home course. Mercer finished with a total of 863 strokes (+11), just two strokes behind Kennesaw State for third place.
"The guys put up a really good round today and I'm proud of them," Mercer head coach Andrew Tredway said. "This was a good momentum builder for A-Sun championship next weekend."
Mercer senior Matt Smith fired a five-under, 66 on the final day of the event to place tied for 26th place individually. Smith joined his classmate, Tribby, as two of three golfers to post rounds better than four-under. Campbell's Vaita Guillaume was the other competitor to post a 66 at the event.
"Tribby played really well and ended up tying for third," Tredway said. "There were a lot of good players there so I'm really happy for him. Smith came up big for us today couldn't have come at a better time."
Freshman William Meason also tied for 26th place, finishing the event with a 76 on Sunday. Meason's classmates Matt Kocolowski and Thomas Holmes posted scores of 78 and 77, respectively, in the final round. Kocolowski tied for 32nd with a two-day total of 222 while Holmes tied for 43rd with a total score of 224.
Mercer has a 13-day layoff before returning to action at the Atlantic Sun championship April 19.
