Men's Basketball Continues to Shine Among NCAA Stat Leaders
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men’s basketball team continued to well-represented in the second NCAA Division I statistical report released Monday, December 5.
The Bears’ team is currently 25th in field goal percentage defense at 37.0 percent (with opponents hitting just 162 of 438 attempts). Mercer is also 50th in defending the three-point shot, with foes hitting just 28.4 percent (48-169) from beyond the arc against the MU team. The Bears lead the Atlantic Sun Conference in both categories, as well
Mercer is 35th as a team in free throw percentage at 74.3 percent (110-148), which also tops the A-Sun. MU ranks 54th in rebound margin, grabbing an average of 6.0 caroms per game.
Mercer’s team is also tops in the A-Sun in scoring defense (63.1 p.p.g.) and blocked shots (4.6 b.p.g.).
Individually, redshirt sophomore Jakob Gollon is one reason for the Bears’ high free throw rating as a team. Gollon – the A-Sun individual leader in free throw percentage - stands at No. 14 in the nation, connecting on 93.1 percent (27-29) from the charity stripe.
Senior Justin Cecil is 39th in the nation for three-point field goal percentage at 45.5 percent. He also tops the A-Sun in treys made per game at 2.5.
Sophomore Daniel Coursey is 56th in the nation in blocked shots at 2.1 per game, which is atop the A-Sun, as well. Coursey leads the A-Sun in field goal percentage (67.5 percent/27-40), but barely missed the needed number of attempts necessary to qualify for the national stats.
