Bears Seek Fourth Straight; Welcome Jacksonville on Monday

GAME NOTES

 

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's basketball team looks to remain unbeaten at the University Center in Atlantic Sun play Monday as the Bears welcome in Jacksonville for a 7 p.m. tip. Monday night's game wraps up a three-game home stand for the Bears.

 

Mercer is coming off a 69-58 conference win over North Florida on Saturday night, which moves the team's overall record to 14-7 and 6-2 in the Atlantic Sun. Head coach Bob Hoffman has his team off to its best start in his four years in Macon and the best conference start since 2004-05.

 

Mercer is the current co-leader atop the A-Sun standings alongside Belmont at 6-2.  Monday night's game will be the first meeting between Jacksonville and Mercer this season.

 

THE SERIES:   The Bears trail in the all-time series against the Dolphins, 18-29. Last season the teams split the season series with the Bears taking 70-68 overtime win at home before dropping a 74-68 loss at JU. Mercer's head coach Bob Hoffman is 3-2 against JU since taking over in the 2008-09 season.

 

OPPONENT AT-A-GLANCE:  Jacksonville comes into the University Center after defeating Kennesaw St. on Saturday night, 66-50. Jacksonville has won two-straight after snapping a 13-game losing streak.  This is the second worst start to the season for Dolphins head coach Cliff Warren since taking over JU in 2005-06 when he went 1-26 overall.

 

Jacksonville was picked to finish third among A-Sun competition in a preseason poll of  the league's media and fourth by the coaches. Currently the Dolphins sit in ninth position in the latest A-Sun standings. 

 

JU boast three players in the A-Sun top 30 scorers. Keith McDougald is 14th, averaging 11.6 ppg.  Teammate Glenn Powell adds 10.8 per game and is18th in the conference. Delwan Graham is also averaging over 10 points a game(10.4) and is 26th in the league.

 

Graham and Powell are 4th and 5th respectively in rebounding in the A-Sun. Graham pulls down 7 boards a game, while Powell averages 6.9.

 

Graham was also the lone Jacksonville player to be selected to the preseason All-A-Sun Team.

 

The Dolphins are 2-11 in road contests this season.

 

JU'S LAST TIME OUT: Jacksonville rattled off a nice 16-point road win against A-Sun foe, Kennesaw St. 66-50 on Saturday night. JU was led by Delwan Graham who recorded his second-straight double-double. Graham finished with a career-high 19 points and snagged 12 rebounds.
