Two Bears men’s basketball players recognized on NABC Honors Court

MACON, Ga. – Two members of the 2009-10 Mercer University men’s basketball team – BeJay Corley and Brendan Walker – have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches “Honors Court” list. The annual awards recognize players from all levels of four-year institutions who excelled in the classroom during the past season.

Criteria for the award includes being a junior or senior member of the varsity team, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better for the most recent year. Student-athletes must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution and be a member of an NCAA Division I, II, III or NAIA institution.

Although Corley – a senior - was on the shelf last season because of a foot injury, he was still a team leader in academics. He is a finance major who was twice named to the Atlantic Sun Conference’s All-Academic Team. Corley is from Marietta, Ga. and an alumnus of Wheeler High School.

Walker, also a senior in 2009-10, appeared in 29 of the Bears’ 33 contests, making three starts along the way. Walker was recognized on the A-Sun All-Academic squad three seasons and, as a senior, earned MU’s Henry H. “Trot” Ware, Jr. Award for sporting the highest grade point average among the men's basketball team.  A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Walker is an industrial management major.

“I am very proud of both BeJay and Brendan,” said Mercer University head coach Bob Hoffman. “Both are fine young men who, I believe, will go on to accomplish many great things in their lives. They both represented the core values and principles of Mercer University and of our program and are very deserving of these honors.”

The 2009-10 Bears team went 16-17 overall. Mercer’s strong finish to the season saw it advance through the A-Sun championship tournament before narrowly falling in the championship game at MU’s own University Center before a national television audience on ESPN2.
