Former Bears' Standout Henry Signs Pro Contract to Play in Germany
MACON, Ga. – Former Mercer University men’s basketball standout Calvin Henry has signed a one-year contract with the UBC Tigers, based out of Hanover, Germany. The Tigers play in Germany’s Pro A League.
“I am very excited to join the Tigers this season and I can’t wait for the season to start,” said Henry. “I feel the management has put together a quality team and I look forward to helping the Tigers win.”
Henry was a forward for the Bears’ program for three seasons from 2006-2009, playing his final year under current MU head coach Bob Hoffman.
“Although I only had Calvin for one season I knew he was a gifted player,” said Hoffman. “He just did so many things well and contributed wherever it was needed for the good of the team.
“Likewise, Calvin was a very hard worker and often did the little ‘extras’ on his own to improve his game. It’s great to see good things – like a professional contract – happen for individuals like him who have paid the price for success.”
As a senior, Henry averaged 10.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game. He shot more than 50-percent from the field (82-163) and was a 78-percent free throw shooter.
Mercer men’s basketball aficionados will recall that Henry’s senior season had a very memorable beginning. The Bears opened the 2008-09 campaign 3-0, topping both Alabama and Auburn on the road in back-to-back games, before suffering its first loss of the year at home in overtime to Georgia Tech before a packed house at the University Center. Henry had a game-high 13 boards in the loss at ‘Bama.
“Henry is a versatile player who can be used at either the 3 or 4 positions,” said Tigers’ head coach Mahmut Ataman. “He can shoot from inside or the outside, but also challenges opponents because of his mobility. His excellent timing leads to many clean blocks which will cause problems for opponents, as well.”
