Brown Commits to Bears Men's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – Mercer University head coach Bob Hoffman added what is expected to be the final piece of the puzzle that will make up his 2010-11 men’s basketball roster, as Monty Brown has committed to play for the Bears beginning in the fall of 2010.
Only time will tell how big of a statistical impact Brown, an incoming freshman, will have upon the MU team, but at 6’11”, 250 pounds the post player from The Hotchkiss School (Conn.) instantly becomes the biggest piece of the Bears’ puzzle, physically.
“We are very pleased that we were able to get Monty here at Mercer,” said Hoffman. “He has some great physical tools and we believe he has the potential to develop into a great player for us.
“He is also a good student, which is every bit as important to us in the recruiting process. I believe Monty will be a good fit with Mercer University.”
As a senior at The Hotchkiss School – an independent boarding school located in Lakeville, Conn. – Brown averaged more than 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots per game. He shot 70 percent from the field and was a 2010 McDonald's All-American nomineee. He played two years for The Hotchkiss School and at Liberty Mounds High School (Okla.) prior to that.
"I am very excited for Monty," said Hotchkiss head coach Fred Benjamin. "Mercer fits what Monty was looking for. He's an outstanding young man and I'm very happy for him."
Brown, a native of Liberty Mounds, Okla., had originally made an oral commitment to attend Harvard University, but changed his mind. Brown will get a chance to play against the Crimson as Harvard is tentatively scheduled to visit Macon on November 20 for the Bears’ Homecoming Game.
Brown is planning on majoring in either business or physical therapy at Mercer.
