MACON, Ga. – As the culmination of nearly two months of spring practice and drills, Mercer football head coach Bobby Lamb announced Monday the date of the Bears' upcoming inaugural Spring Game.
Mercer began its first official spring practice season back on February 18th and will conclude the nearly two months of work with the Spring Game set for April 13, 2013. The doors of the new Moye Family Football Complex will be open to the public at 11:30 a.m. with the game to begin at 12 p.m. (noon). Lamb is encouraging all Bear fans to attend the scrimmage.
"The spring game will be a great opportunity for fans to see all the hard work and effort this program has put in over the last eight months," Lamb said. "From the fall practice season to this spring's workouts, we have grown and evolved and I am excited to see us take the next step."
The spring game will be the first full exhibition of the Mercer football program since the team resumed operations after a 70-year hiatus last fall. It will be a chance for Mercer fans to see how far the program has come, as the scrimmage projects to involve a game-type atmosphere and tempo.
"We expect our players to go out there and compete," Lamb said. "Each time they hit the field they are auditioning for a spot on this team and the spring game will be no different."
Lamb and his staff, by virtue of being a first-year football program, has had a little more time to work and evaluate players this spring. The spring game acts as the final practice before the team takes an on-the-field break.
The coaching staff will taken an additional two weeks after the spring game to further evaluate the team as student-athletes are expected to report back for fall practice on August 1.
