MACON, Ga. – The Mercer football program met yet another milestone on Thursday by releasing its 2013 fall schedule and uniforms at its inaugural "Meet the Bears" event.
Revealing the 12-game schedule was just one part of the "Meet the Bears" event as hundreds of Mercer fans flooded the Moye Family Football/Lacrosse Complex to visit with the team, tour the newly finished Drake Field House and enjoy food and beverages provided by businesses from Mercer Village.
In addition to the eight-game Pioneer Football League schedule, the Bears face four non-conference opponents in its first collegiate football season since 1941. Now less than a year away, the Bears are set to open up the season at home against NAIA member Reinhardt on August 31, 2013. Reinhardt is an upstart program from Waleska, Ga. that will begin its first-ever football season next year as well.
In total, Mercer boasts eight home games in its first season compared to just four on the road. After a bye week in week two, the Bears host Warner (NAIA) on Sept. 14 and Berry College (Div. III) on Sept. 21 before opening up the PFL slate against Drake in Macon on Sept. 28.
Mercer's first road trip is currently scheduled to be play at the University of San Diego on October 5, 2013. Returning to Macon, the Bears face off against Valparaiso (Oct. 12) and host Carnegie Mellon for a non-conference matchup on Oct. 19.
The conference road slate continues with back-to-back games in North Carolina with Mercer playing first at former Atlantic Sun conference foe, Campbell (Oct. 26) and at Davidson on Nov. 2. The final three games of the season see the Bears playing against Jacksonville at home on Nov. 9 and then at Marist on Nov. 16. Mercer wraps up the season at home against Stetson, who will also be joining the Pioneer Football League in 2013.
The uniforms were also unveiled at the event with the Bears coming out in all black with orange numbers and orange and white stripes alongside the pants. The helmets debuted in a matte black with the same orange and white striping down the middle of the helmet.
