Barrett, Teasley Propel Mercer to Series Sweep of No. 24 FGCU
MACON, Ga. – A go-ahead two-run home run by junior Austin Barrett and another dazzling relief outing from senior David Teasley helped carry the Mercer baseball team to a three-game series sweep of No. 24 Florida Gulf Coast with a 7-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Claude Smith Field.
For Mercer (29-10, 10-5 A-Sun), the sweep is its first conference series sweep of the season and its first ever series sweep of FGCU (20-12, 6-6 A-Sun) since the Eagles turned Division I back in 2007.
The Bears move their record up to 16-3 when playing at Claude Smith Field this season and with Sunday's win are now tied with SEC member Mississippi State for the eighth-most wins in the country.
Things didn't look good for Mercer early on as the Eagles started the contest with runs in the first and second innings off Bears starter Brandon Barker. A pair of RBI singles by junior Brandon Bednar and senior Brooks Beisner and a solo home run from sophomore Michael Sucky gave FGCU a 3-0 lead.
The Bears bided their time and started to make their methodical comeback offensively in the bottom of the third when a pair of RBI singles by sophomore Chesny Young and junior Derrick Workman made the score 3-2.
Young continued his monster series at the dish in the bottom of the fifth when he connected for a solo home run to bring Mercer into a tie with FGCU, at 3-3.
While the Mercer offense was starting to find its groove, Teasley was doing what he does best on the mound by stifling the FGCU offense to the tune of 3.2 scoreless innings of relief.
With Teasley holding the Eagles at bay, the Bears jumped in front for good thanks to a clutch two-out swing by Barrett. The Mims, Fla. native connected on a two-run home run, his third of the season, in the bottom of the seventh inning to push Mercer in front 5-3.
Young hit .463 for the weekend against FGCU pitching and finished the series off on Sunday with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate to go along with two RBI and two runs scored.
Mercer gets a day off before traveling to Statesboro for a mid-week contest against Georgia Southern on April 14. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at J.I. Clements Stadium.
