MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Mercer baseball team received another dominant pitching performance by freshman Dawson Brown in a 6-2 win over Alabama State on Wednesday evening at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Following in the footsteps of sophomore Brandon Barker yesterday, Brown threw his first career complete game and the second in as many days for Mercer (26-18), who hadn't received a nine-inning performance from any pitcher since 2009 until the past two days.
Neither side could generate much offense through the first three innings of play until the Bears broke out with a three-run top of the fourth. With two outs in the frame, junior Logan Gaines pulled an RBI single to left field and sophomore Derrick Workman followed with a two-RBI double to give Mercer a 3-0 advantage.
After four shutout innings on the mound by Brown, Alabama State managed to scrap across its first run in 14 innings against the Bears with a fielder choice RBI by freshman Einar Muniz to make the score 3-1.
The Orange and Black grabbed the run right back in the top of the sixth thanks to another RBI single by Gaines and a throwing error to put Mercer in front by four, at 5-1.
Brown did the rest from there looking sharp on the mound throughout. The McDonough, Ga. native threw a season-high nine innings and allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits to go along with six strikeouts to pick up his third win of the season.
Freshman Chesny Young continued to tear it up at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to raise his batting average up to .355 which is good for fourth in the entire Atlantic Sun Conference.
Mercer concludes its 12-day road trip this weekend when it travels to the Sunshine State for a three-game series with Jacksonville. Game one is scheduled for Friday evening at 6 p.m. at John Sessions Stadium.
