MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Mercer baseball team received a superstar outing from sophomore Brandon Barker to capture a 6-0 win over Alabama State on Tuesday evening at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Barker went the distance in the contest for Mercer (25-18), needing 103 pitches to throw the first complete game by any Mercer pitcher since 2009.
The Bears jumped out in front early, using a four-run top of the third inning to grab the lead. Three-straight RBI singles by junior Evan Boyd, freshman Chesny Young and redshirt sophomore Nick Backlund highlighted the frame that put Mercer ahead 4-0.
That would turn out to be all the run support the Orange and Black would need thanks to the effort on the mound by Barker. The Woodstock, Ga. product went all nine innings and allowed no runs on just four hits to go along with a career-high nine strikeouts.
The Bears added on some insurance late, using an RBI triple by Boyd and an RBI single by Young to go ahead 6-0.
Junior Travis Benn had a career-high three hits in the contest while Boyd collected just his second triple of his career and two RBI in the win.
Mercer concludes its two-game mid-week set at Alabama State tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
