MACON, Ga. – Every starter in the Bears lineup had at least one hit to help the Mercer baseball team cruise to a 13-2 win over Florida A&M on Tuesday evening at Claude Smith Field.
Mercer (15-7) also held an opponent to three earned runs or less for the 15th time already this season after accomplishing the same feat on 28 occasions in 2011.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the third, the Bears broke the game open with a four-run third inning. A two-run home run by junior Logan Gaines, his seventh of the season, put the home team in front by a 5-1 margin.
The Mercer pitching staff took over from there, allowing just one more run over the final six innings of play. Starter Dawson Brown allowed two earned runs in five innings pitched, while seniors Jacob Matthews and Colby Collins and freshmen Eric Nyquist and Mitchell Wade all pitched a scoreless inning of relief to close out the game.
The Orange and Black tacked on five more runs in bottom of the eighth to eliminate any thought of a Florida A&M comeback. Freshman Chesny Young hit a bases clearing double to cap the rally and make the final score 13-2.
Sophomore Nate Moorhouse had a career day at the dish, going 4-for-5 with two RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases, upping his team-high total to 12 on the season.
Mercer hits the field again tomorrow afternoon to take Florida A&M. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Claude Smith Field.
