TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Junior Logan Gaines and sophomore Nick Backlund each had three RBI to compliment a strong staff pitching performance in an 8-2 win at Florida A&M on Tuesday evening at Moore-Kittles Field.
Mercer (4-1) put up four runs in the fourth inning and rode a strong start from freshman Dawson Brown to win its 11th straight game over Florida A&M (1-2).
Backlund started the game off with an RBI double to left field to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Gaines kept things going in the top of the third when he turned on a 1-0 pitch and blasted it over the left field fence for a solo home run to put the Orange and Black in front by a 2-0 margin.
After the Rattlers pushed a run across in the bottom half of the third to cut the Bears lead down to 2-1, Mercer put together a four-run top of the fourth to make the score 6-1 and put the game out of reach. Gaines had the big hit in the frame when he pulled a two-RBI double to left field.
Brown and a combination of relievers did the heavy lifting the rest of the way, limiting FAMU to just one more run over the final five innings. Brown went 4.2 innings and allowed just the one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts. Junior David Teasley picked up the win in the contest after throwing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Mercer is back at it tomorrow afternoon when it takes on Florida A&M again at 4 p.m. at Moore-Kittles Field.
