Workman Named to Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Team
MACON, Ga. – Mercer baseball freshman outfielder Derrick Workman was voted onto the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Team as announced by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Wednesday morning.
Workman was one of only five Atlantic Sun Conference players voted onto the squad and is Mercer’s first Freshman All-American since junior Jacob Tanis took home the honor in 2009.
“What a great honor for Derrick and it is definitely well deserved because I can honestly say the year he put together this season was the best freshman campaign I have ever seen,” head coach Craig Gibson said. “Derrick did a great job of stepping right into our lineup as an everyday player as a true freshman this season and I expect great things from him in the years to come.”
The Acworth, Ga. native was one of just four Bears to start in all 59 games this season, logging 57 starts in left field, one in center field and one as a designated hitter. Workman hit .332 this season and ranking among the team leaders in stolen bases (2nd – 11), total bases (4th – 118), hits (4th – 77), RBI (4th – 47), doubles (T-4th - 12), batting average (5th - .332) and home runs (5th – 9). Workman finished third on the team with 24 multi-hit games and put together a team-long 15-game hitting streak from March 26-April 19.
The Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American honor is the second award Workman has collected this season, as he was a unanimous selection to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman team just a few weeks earlier.
Workman and the rest of the Bears will be watching Rounds 31-50 of the 2011 MLB Draft starting today at 12 noon. Several Mercer players are still considered draft prospects so stay tuned to www.mercerbears.com all day tomorrow for up to date coverage.
