Bears Prepare for Pro Scout Day on Saturday
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team is set to welcome major league scouts to its fall scout day scheduled for Saturday, October 16 at 10 a.m. at Claude Smith Field.
Head coach Craig Gibson expects 15-20 scouts representing multiple Major League Baseball teams to attend the event.
"This is our third weekend of fall ball so all our guys are playing really well right now," said Gibson. "It should be a good day for us and I am excited to get some different guys in here to evaluate our talent we have on the field."
The event will begin at 10 a.m. with players stretching and throwing to get loose. Players are then scheduled to run 60-yard dashes, work on position fielding and hit batting practice.
The main event of the day will be a nine inning inter-squad scrimmage that will feature the Bears draft eligible pitchers (juniors and seniors).
The Bears have enjoyed some success in recent Major League Drafts. Junior third baseman Jacob Tanis (26th round) and freshman second baseman DJ Johnson (21st round) were selected in the 2010 MLB Draft and junior center fielder Billy Burns was selected in the 16th round of the 2008 MLB Draft.
As a reminder, fans are encouraged to come out to watch the Bears play on the weekends this fall. Every weekend in October Mercer plays three inter-squad scrimmages including a five-inning game on Friday's at 4:30 p.m., a nine-inning game on Saturday's at 11:15 a.m. and a six-inning game on Sunday's at 2 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.
