Tanis, Winker Named to Rawlings All-South Region Team
MACON, Ga. – Former Mercer baseball players Jacob Tanis and Joe Winker continue to reel in accolades, as both were named Rawlings All-South Region second team members on Friday morning.
Both Tanis (13th round) and Winker (28th round) were selected in the 2011 MLB Draft and are doing well in their first month of pro ball. Tanis was drafted by the Oakland Athletics and is currently playing for the Vermont Lake Monsters in Short-Season Class A Ball, while Winker was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and is playing for the AZL Dodgers in the Arizona Rookie League.
Winker and Tanis were two of just seven Atlantic Sun conference players selected to the regional team, with Tanis earning second team honors at third base and Winker taking home a second team selection as a designated hitter.
Tanis, who was also named to NCBWA All-America second team, finished the 2011 season leading the A-Sun with 75 RBI while ranking among the A-Sun top-10 in home runs (T-2nd – 15), total bases (4th – 145), runs scored (6th – 61), slugging percentage (7th - .612), hits (T-8th – 83) and on-base percentage (10th - .446).
Winker, who was also named an A-Sun All-Conference second team selection, hit .359 in 2011 and ranked third in the A-Sun with a .630 slugging percentage, tied for seventh with 13 home runs and ninth in the league with a .448 on-base percentage.
