Bears Participate in Second Annual Mercer Buddies Event
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team took part in its second annual Baseball Buddies Event on Saturday afternoon at Peyton Anderson Miracle Field in the West Macon Park.
The Bears spent the day playing two games of baseball with special needs children of all ages as part of the Macon Miracle League.
“We always feel very fortunate when we have a chance to give back to the people of the Macon community because they come out and support us on the field all year long,” head coach Craig Gibson said. “It worked out great for us because we had the weekend off and our coaches and players always feel good when they get to go out and work with the kids.”
The all day event started at 11 a.m. and featured Mercer baseball players playing in two games with four different special needs teams. Each Mercer baseball player was paired with a special needs child on each team and helped him or her bat and play in the field.
Miracle League of Macon (MLM) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2003. The Miracle League provides children with mental and/or physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league.
Mercer is in the middle of a week-long break for final exams, but the Bears return to action at 5 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Athens to take on Georgia at Foley Field.
